Among all of my predictions and hopes for 2025, I did not expect a "blizzard" to occur. I am a life-long Houstonian, and snow has fallen a handful times throughout my life. So when I found out it was going to snow in my hometown, I was excited, but did not think much of it. How I was wrong!
That Tuesday morning, what a surprise! A thick white fluff covered our lawn, cars, roof, and the streets. Neighbors were out everywhere building snowmen and igloos, having snowball fights, and sledding down any slight dip in elevation. For many, this was a normal winter day. For those along the Gulf Coast, this was a magical day. Was this really Houston? I’m not sure anyone would believe it unless we had the photos to prove it.
I still wish that it would have been safe to drive the streets, as I thought of so many sites and landmarks I would have loved to see covered in snow. I was quite surprised and happy to see the Saint Constantine School still had patches of snow and ice among the grounds when we returned!
In the fall, one of my favorite days was seeing kids of all grades out on the courtyard dancing together in the sunshine. Now on this same courtyard, students were covered in jackets and mittens while throwing snowballs at one another. Two completely different scenes, but the same incredible students. Watching the way the students interact at this school is truly beautiful. The older ones are taking care of the younger and including them in games and activities, while the younger students are always watching and eager to join in!
I am grateful that the Saint Constantine school is a place that encourages our students to get outside and play together - I always see them filled with so much joy and creativity. The snow may have come and left quickly, but I know that this will be a memorable first day back to school for everyone.
